Your home doesn't reek of anything foul and there is no visible dirt about the place. But you really don't know what or rather who is hiding in those corners. Well, if you want to make sure that there are no unwanted guests enjoying themselves in your home, here are a couple of measures you could take.
1. The first and most important step to a healthy home is to de-clutter. Yes, get rid of all that junk you have tucked under your bed or in lofts. It doesn't matter whether you sell it all or give it away to the poor, but it has got to go.
2. Allot a special day every month for spring-cleaning. Rope in the kids too to clean up their own rooms. This is in addition to the everyday sweeping and mopping or vacuuming.
3. A dark and dingy home is plain unhealthy. So open up those windows and allow as much natural light as possible to enter the home. There must also be adequate cross ventilation.
4. If you have been noticing pests (ants, white ants, cockroaches etc.) around the place, it may be time to call in pest control services.
5. If you suffer from asthma or have a pet in the house for that matter avoid carpet flooring completely. The carpet fur is bad for asthma patients. Also pet fur mingling with tufts of the carpet makes it painful to clean. Carpets also make an excellent shelter for insects.
6. Don't choose thick, heavy curtains that attract dust. Instead opt for thin sheer curtains or even cotton or canvas ones that can be easily washed. You could also try blinds, as they are the easiest to clean.
7. Opt for granite kitchen counter tops. They are non-porous and easy to clean. As a result, bacteria and germs cannot breed in them.
8. Never leave foodstuff exposed overnight. Also dispose off the garbage everyday. Do not let it accumulate even if the garbage man does not turn up. This will help keep insects away.
9. If you happen to have water based plants like Feng Shui or money plants, make sure to change the water every two days or so. You don't want to invite mozzies. Don't forget mosquito screens and nets for your windows as well.
10. Bathrooms are another place where germs thrive. Other than basic bathroom cleanliness, you could have the drains cleaned once a week. Tile the walls of the bathroom up to the top so you can clean them easily.
